Core Domestic Violence Protocols
include the following:
PURPOSE STATEMENT
For example: In recognition of the tremendous impact of domestic violence
on the health of our patients/clients and staff, we make ourselves aware of
the dynamics of abuse, screen patients for abuse, advocate for victims and children,
and document what we see, hear and suspect based on observation.
DEFINITION
For example: Domestic violence is a pattern of assaultive and abusive behaviors
including physical, emotional, sexual, and economic coercion that adults or
adolescents intentionally and systematically use against their intimate partners,
family or household members. Without intervention, the violence usually escalates
in frequency and severity.
STANDARDS FOR TRAINING
Recommended for all staff: Two hours of domestic violence awareness training.
Two hours of specific skills training on screening, assessment, intervention,
documentation and follow-up.
EMPLOYEE HEALTH AND SAFETY

management in addressing personal experiences of domestic violence. Every department
should have a safety plan for in place for handling abusive/threatening individuals.
